In the Soviet era, Moldova was a great place to "fall into the sere, the yellow leaf." The country lured retirees from across the Soviet Union with its mild climate, plethora of fresh fruits, and scarce goods such as Czech crystal, Polish furniture, even Albanian fur coats and Italian boots.
